It is almost time for school to start and for me that means it is almost time to make play-dough. I enjoy making my own since I know what is in it. I am going to try gluten free flour this year in case there are wheat allergies. Wonder if it will still come out right?
Why is play-dough so important in the early childhood classroom?
You can use play-dough:
To make letters/words with cookie cutter or fingers
To make numerals, sets, 2D and 3D shapes
Increase fine motor skills-put things in, roll it, cut it…
To provide a science experiment when making, exploring, adding color
To tap into imagination with creations
To increase sensory exploration: add scents or objects
To promote social Skills: create opportunities for discussion among students
To help calm students on those inside rainy/snowy days
To increase hand-eye coordination
To increase self esteem-anyone can play with play-dough
To increase attention span
The opportunities for growth are endless! The recipe I have trusted for years is:
(This makes about 4 cups of play-dough. If kept sealed in a Zip-lock bag, it will last for about 2 months.)
2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup salt
2 Tbsp. cream of tartar
Mix all dry ingredients.
Next, add and blend together:
2 cups water
2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
Cook mixture in an un-greased pan, stirring constantly (I use a whisk until it is blended, then a wooden spoon.) until all the mixture clumps together to form a large ball. Remove from heat and allow to cool.
Knead in food coloring. (There are cool neon colors available too!)
